Old Library Looms

This year-long community project combined timber construction and textile weaving to create functional and beautiful textile installations for The Exchange, a restored Carnegie library in Erith.

Leading sessions with timber and textile volunteers, I guided the groups in designing and building four bespoke looms using repurposed timber salvaged from the building’s restoration. While the looms’ mechanisms were thoughtfully designed to incorporate elements from traditional weaving tools, the joinery and overall finish were shaped by the creativity and craftsmanship of the volunteers.

This collaborative project celebrated both making and sustainability, weaving the building’s history into its future through hands-on skill-sharing and community engagement.
