The Crittall Blinds

This year-long community project combined timber construction and textile weaving to create a functional and beautiful textile installation for The Exchange, an old Carnegie library in Erith. Leading weekly sessions with timber and textile volunteers, I guided the group in designing and building four bespoke looms from waste timber, fostering a process of experimentation and play before participants moved on to larger-scale weaving. Working communally, they wove linen tapestry panels, which were then sewn together to form a window blind for the building.

The project has since evolved to include fabric linen options, incorporating sewing techniques for a more accessible and time-efficient approach. By structuring the programme to accommodate all skill levels, the initiative continues to empower participants to contribute to a long-term vision—creating blinds for the entire building while engaging in a shared making process.
